A new Nigeria is truly possible by Mathias Tsado

Mathias Tsado

I think majority of Nigerians see politics as a lucrative business, the rate at which everyone focuses on the pie is really disheartening as well as frightening, the main objectives of leadership is being relegated to the background and the quest for wealth, fame and prestige is now running the space.

Everyone is being encouraged to run for office regardless of whether he or she possesses the right qualities and leadership skills, people are clamouring for more shares of power, resources and raw national wealth, no one seem to be concerned about the responsibility of the offices they seek to occupy.

A lot has gone wrong over the years, government has always been seen as a pot of porridge, so everyone comes with forks and knives to help themselves to a fill, it has also been seen as a turn by turn scenario where a man and his cronies come at a point and run the shows while others wait outside and salivate praying profusely for their turn to come.

The biggest crime in all of these is there is a group that has perpetually been locked out, they do not have access to the national cake, neither do they have the privilege of being considered for left overs, they only watch the giants help themselves most often times on the screen of a box television from their neighbours house or at a viewing centre.

They watch the juggernauts struggle and tussle for the grab on the lion share, they admire their crispy babariga and their lousy turare (perfumes) they see the politicians cars and they are ecstatic, they love them, they admire them and they worship them especially when the politician is from their tribe, religion or state.

So the terrain is a battlefield, it’s a dog competition, it’s a fight to death, its a survive or drown, betrayal is to them just a game and honesty is when interests aligned and a deal is ultimately struck, blood means nothing to them and life is only useful when it’s on their side, to them it’s a game of the throne, you either kill or be killed, the political battle in our country has no room for ideology competition, it’s powered are driven by sentiment, this is the narrative that suites the political elite.

While the combat for supremacy rages on the core objectives of leadership is being neglected, people have become so fascinated with the throne and the perks of office and they ignore the responsibilities that comes with the perks, our nation has suffered and continue to suffer setbacks because of the quality of thinking of those who man the posts of leadership in the country.

We have continued to be ridiculed by our neighbours in Africa and elsewhere around the globe, not because we cannot do well but because those who are expected to drive the processes seem to be engulfed in the game of throne rather than offering quality, selfless and accountable leadership, the citizens are mostly left wondering like sheep without a shepherd, the leaders do not care about the wellbeing of their followers tankless of their productivity.

We continue to grope in darkness even while it’s day and our eyes could see clearly, this is the part that gets me really worried, how could a nation who is almost on her knees begging for survival be thinking of switching from one old captain to the other, when the real call is for us to have a complete paradigm shift, a departure from the old system, a new software installation and begin the rebuilding process of our country.

The power tussle and the quest for wealth has dominated our political deliberations, majority of the people are in the fight for personal gains only, hence the common narrative of “politics is all about interest” holds strongly, in this case it’s all about selfish interest, greed and an unquenchable appetite for power, here, the rules are that there are no rules, here monies move in billions within a moment and deals are done while the people admire the prowess and shrewd nature of the deal makers.

Nothing eventually gets to the man who fought for his Christian or Muslim brother candidates, the roads remain unmotorable, the schools remains conducive only for rodents and roches, our healthcare system remains one of the worst in the world, and while China is talking of solar powered plains we are talking about pencil manufacturing, while tesla is building clean energy we are yet to achieve 5hour a day power supply as a country, our data system is one of the worst in the world, security is so poor that governors have allocate hundreds of millions to secure themselves in the name of secure vote.

Elected officials treat themselves to whatever they like, they build mansions with the taxpayer’s money, they celebrate election victories like they’ve won lottery or jackpot, accountability and transparency is zero, impunity reigns supreme in their heart.

Yet the people cannot challenge them, because they control the army and the police.

We must begin to twist our thinking about the leadership system in our country and its recruitment processes, the people must rise in unity and challenge the old order, we cannot expect a different result by doing the same thing.

We need leaders who we can relate with, we need leaders who we the people sponsored to the office not those who buy their ways through looted funds, we need leaders who would be accountable to the people, those who would speak to the people, leaders who we could model our lives after, we need mentors as leaders, those who we can look up to with respect because of the quality of their thinking and not because of the size of their bank accounts, leaders who are innovative and creative, leaders who have the capacity to drive a change process, those who people will be eager to hear From, those who would lead by example, those who truly care about the citizens more than they care about the throne.

Leaders who can generate resources are create wealth for all citizens, those who would introduce new economic policies, those who would build a new economic system that is driven by the creativity, innovative and energy of our people not just who want to share oil wells to their friends and cronies.

We need selfless, creative and transformational leaders to help us deal with the current leadership crisis in Nigeria.

This people can only come from the new breed, a new breed of young men and women who are truly committed to the building of a New Nigeria.

In deed

Mathias Tsado and the challenge to fix Nigeria’s economy by Francis Onyema

Recently Nigeria demanded an immediate restructuring and expansion of the UN Security Council (UNSC) permanent membership to correct the injustices meted out against Africa in the composition of the prestigious 15-member body.
Whereas this call may sound morally right, what we must realize is that like freedom, power is not given, it is fought for. The UNSC permanent members represent the five great powers considered to be the victors of World War II. China, France, Russia, United Kingdom and the US are States that had vigorously developed and diversified their economies to transcend the global power hierarchy. These are States whose economic policies typifies the advancement in technology and improvement in their armaments. They are States who realize that power is the ultimate determinant in human society and implies the ability to defend one's interests and if necessary to impose one's will by any means available.

Thus, we must realize that just as it is difficult for the W…

Who made the game and who flopped? Read our best performance ratings across Europe top leagues

The second week of competitive football in the new year produced mouthwatering performances across the European top leagues.

In the EPL, Pep Guardiola's City were put to the sword at Anfield after 22 games unbeaten run while Barcelona continued with a resilient performance that earned them another win after conceding two goals against Real Sociedad.

We assess and rate the best football team, the players or coaches who made the team and the ones who flopped.

Jurgen Klopp

Jurgen Klopp is the first name on our list this week. The German did not only prove he could match the scintillating attacking football played by Man City but also showed tactical class to topple Guardiola in the EPL second leg tie at Anfield.

Klopp's Liverpool were a joy to watch against the dominant City flyers. His team was set up to play an attacking game with swift flowing passes adding more glamour to the high pressing strategy adopted by the former Dortmund manager.

Statistics proves Mourinho is right to let Mkhitaryan go by Francis Onyema

Hennrikh Mkhitaryan is set to become an Arsenal football player in a swap deal that sees Alexis Sanchez head to the red half of Manchester.

The Armenia captain was signed by Jose Mourinho, in the 2016 summer transfer window, to provide the creative spark that was much needed to rejuvenate the Old Trafford club, in order to compete at all fronts but especially in the EPL.

Mkhitaryan's stay at Old Trafford has been cut short as the deal to join Arsenal is at best the best deal for him to get back to the level he played at Borussia Dortmund before Mourinho swooped for him.

The debate, however, remains whether Mourinho is right to let the talented star leave Man United in the January transfer window. Or should Micki had been given more time to flourish at Old Trafford?

Prior to his move to United, he was a creative force to reckon with in Europe.

Muhammad Ali was the "greatest human" who ever lived

Muhammad Ali was handsome; a fighter and a religious man. He was a believer - he believed more in his abilities- and that, no doubt, set him out as a winner. Perhaps, the greatest lesson we can draw from the world boxing legend.

Before that famous fight with Liston in Miami, Clay, as Ali was known before converting to Islam, in a pre-fight build up dubbed Liston "the big ugly guy" and boasted he would beat and donate him to the zoo. Many thought Clay's rant was out of fear as he faced a man who destroyed former "heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson in two first-round knock outs" but it turned out to be a show of believe. At the Age of 22, the man to be celebrated as "greatest human" shook the world and announced "I am the greatest." Clay had beaten Liston - a dominating fighter with a criminal past and ties to the mob - to be crowned the heavy weight champion in 1964.

Muhammad Ali loved every bit of himself and was never intimidated by ethn…

How President Jonathan saved President-elect Buhari

In what can be described as an unprecedented move by Mr Goodluck Jonathan, who is expected to handover power to the president elect, Gen Muhammadu Buhari, in a democratic exchange of baton between the domineering People's Democratic Party (PDP) and the emerging ruling party, All Progressive Congress (APC) billed for May 29th, 2015, the incumbent president continued to display his flamboyance of 'sportsmanship' and has extended his olive branch of peace to the president elect.

Firstly, President Jonathan ensured that peace‎ was of essence over 'personal ambition' by swiftly telephoning his APC counterpart, Gen Buhari ,on his victory, whom triumphed in the March 28th hotly contested presidential election with over 3million votes.

This move by Mr President practically saved the nation from an impending chaos. It is, therefore, a remarkable process of democratic consolidation in the country for which he must be applauded.

However, ‎it does not seem the incumbent presid…

Why Buhari should step down for Mathias Baba Tsado in 2019 by Francis Onyema

How do you solve a problem like Nigeria?
There's insurgency in the North; agitation in the East and oil spillage in the Niger Delta region. Governor El Rufai’s plan to sack over 20,000 teachers in Kaduna State on grounds of incompetence underpins the fact that the nation's educational system is in disarray just as the health system continues to fail. Whereas Morocco are concluding plans to acquire what would be Africa’s fastest trains, the Nigerian government cannot boast of adequate road networks across the nation. The roads are in a bad state and often constitutes deathtraps to commuters who must meet their daily ends while not forgetting that electricity supply is not efficient to boost local productivity.
The most damning indicator that the end of Nigeria's problem is not clearly in sight,  especially with this crop of leaders at the helm of public affairs, is the recent fuel scarcity that has become almost synonymous with the Christmas season. It is embarrassing that a…

PDP cannot deceive Deltans anymore - Oyibode

Q: For the sake of our reading public, we would want to know you and have an insight into your background before your current status as APC Chieftain?

Thank you very much.

I'm Chief Dr (Amb) Gabriel Chukwuma Oyibode, an Ndokwa son from Ezionum Kingdom. For those who may not know, Ezionum Kingdom is one of the Ndokwa Nations in Delta State. So, I am a proud Deltan born. I am a dispute resolution specialist and an ambassador for peace. I am also a real estate consultant.

I established and founded the Gabriel Oyibode Foundation (GOF) in 2013 given my conviction that we could build peace globally through humanitarian efforts of providing for the less privileged and downtrodden of the society. You know all fingers are not equal and the Bible admonishes us to be our brother's keeper. Even before GOF was legally registered in 2013, I have been involved in the humanitarian service for more than a decade. Registering it was to give it a face and a legal recognition as deemed fit.

So, …
